Since 1998, the Shasta Land Trust (SLT) has led efforts to identify and conserve significant lands in the north state that provide open space, wildlife habitat, scenic views, recreation, and working agriculture to the surrounding communities. SLT is an accredited land trust with 501(c)(3) non-profit status that holds conservation easements on more than 60,000 acres across Shasta County. With a growing portfolio of projects, we anticipate growing our conservation efforts to over 70,000 acres in the next two years.

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
Job Title: Director of Development
Position: Exempt
Reports To: Executive Director
Classification: Full Time (40 hrs/week)

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Development is responsible for developing successful fundraising strategies, as well as maintenance of our donor database, major donor cultivation and recruitment, and planned giving. The Director of Development will manage the overall marketing and promotional efforts to construct and market SLT’s image, develop relationships, and achieve fundraising goals.
In addition, the Director of Development leads all aspects of external communications, digital and print marketing, and public education/community outreach activities. In addition to planning and implementing our annual Wildways fundraising event season, they will be responsible for managing our fundraising program to raise unrestricted funds from individuals, businesses, and private foundations.
This position works closely with the Executive Director, staff, Board of Directors, and Committees and is expected to attend Board and Committee meetings.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Donor Cultivation: Working with the Executive Director, develop long-term donor engagement strategies and implement donor appreciation efforts to sustain the organization’s existing base of support. Manage the Operations & Engagement Coordinator to ensure sound donor data management and fund development tracking. Work with the Executive Director to develop major donor leads outreach efforts, and other sources of donor development.
Organizational Development: Drive initiatives within the development team that contribute to long-term organizational success, support short and long-term planning. Consult with the leadership team on matters related to fundraising, program operations, organizational priorities, and growth.
Communications Strategy: Maintain an evolving strategic Communications, Outreach, and Education plan that amplifies the critical importance of the Shasta Land Trust’s mission by supporting fundraising, member/donor engagement, education programming, and other community outreach efforts.
Fundraising: Working with the Executive Director and Board, develop and implement fundraising campaigns using creative, strategic, and effective development strategies. Prepare and implement fundraising plans and craft appeals for annual giving, planned giving, Giving Tuesday, and special campaigns. Working with the Executive Director, seek funding and sponsorships from sources that can include foundations, individual donors, Board members, planned gifts, and businesses/corporations.
Brand Management: Serve as the primary steward and guardian of the Shasta Land Trust brand and voice by ensuring consistent adherence to our brand and editorial style guides.
Outreach Events: Oversee planning and execution of an annual schedule of events and activities that engage and inform diverse segments of the Shasta Land Trust community. These include the annual Wildways event program, member outings and field trips, public lectures, and other community outreach events. Manage and coordinate outreach activities with the Director of Conservation and Executive Director for public audiences.
Volunteer Program: Supervise the Operations and Engagement Coordinator in developing and implementing a thriving volunteer program that includes strategies for recruiting, retaining, and acknowledging volunteers.
Print Communications: Lead the creation of content, design, and production of Shasta Land Trust’s print bi-annual update booklet, brochures, flyers, and other printed materials.
Digital Communications: Lead the content-creation, design, and distribution of electronic communications, including email newsletters and other email-based marketing, the Shastalandtrust.org website, and other digital media.
Public Relations: Respond to press inquiries, write articles and press releases, and consult with the Executive Director on issues that may require an organizational response.
Website management: Ensure the maintenance and updating of Shasta Land Trust’s website. Ensure that website updates requested by other staff members are performed in a timely manner.
Social Media: Oversee development and implementation of a vibrant social media plan that builds upon Shasta Land Trust’s presence on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms.
Photo and Video Archives: Oversee maintenance and expansion of archive of photos and video footage for communications and marketing purposes.
GENERAL:
1. Follow priorities set by Executive Director and Board of Directors.
2. Attend Board meetings and Committee meetings, as assigned.
3. Compile reports and regularly update Executive Director, Committees, and Board of Directors on development and fundraising progress.
4. Attend conferences, training sessions, meetings and seminars; report on major issues and actions.
5. Maintain confidentiality.
6. Perform additional duties as assigned, consistent with qualifications or position responsibilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s degree preferred in related field such as communications, marketing, or business administration, etc.
2. Experience with non-profit organizations.
3. Experience with fundraising programs, database management, and working with volunteers.
4. Passion for land conservation and a commitment to Shasta Land Trust’s mission and values.
5. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and donors.
6. Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence in talking with guests and donors over email, phone, and in person.
7. Proficient writing and editing skills with the ability to clearly convey information to the general public.
8. Strong organizational skills, with skill in effectively prioritizing work projects and ability to manage time under rigid deadlines.
9. Creative individual willing to contribute ideas to the organization.
10. Operation and use of Windows-based computer applications including Word and Excel, as well as experience with Adobe Illustrator or other similar computer programs.
11. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, per Shasta Land Trust events schedule.
12. Willingness to learn/train.
QUALIFICATIONS AND BENEFITS
This is a full-time position with a flexible schedule that accommodates in-person and hybrid work-from-home schedules.
Salary Range: $60,000-$75,000
